Moss

I'd like to respond to the post about Stanley Moss and talk a little bit more about him. I agree very much that I wanted to know more about him; I thought that the point of having a poet or author or specialist in any field visit a class was to give the students an opportunity to learn more about the field, how to get into it, how the visitor got into it, and any other wisdom that the visitor can provide. He did seem interesting, but I was turned off by the fact that he did not seem prepared, and he seemed to offer mean criticism instead of constructive criticism or even compliments to one student. He may have meant what he said differently, but his wording about prose vs. poetry was condescending. I wasn't able to attend his reading the night before, but I'm surprised to hear that he didn't say much about himself then either. As I said, I found him interesting, and his poetry interesting too, and would love to have heard more about the person that he is and the process that he took to becoming the poet he is today. Also, I have a tattoo; I don't even know why I didn't feel like telling Mr. Moss, but I can't lie to you, class.
